What is a TESOL (TEFL/TESL) Course?

For millions of people, English knowledge is important in their jobs, personal lives or their studies, but learning English is difficult and stressful if attempted without proper guidance.

TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) is a term used to describe training courses, and certificates, for English speakers to teach English. TESOL is a general term used to cover two types of English Language Teaching (also referred to as ELT):

TEFL - Teaching English as a Foreign Language - is a term used to describe the teaching of the English language in countries where access to English is very limited, and English is considered a foreign language. In these cases, English language teaching begins at a very basic level. Thailand, Cambodia, China and Vietnam, are examples of countries using the TEFL methodology.

TESL - Teaching English as a Second Language - is used in countries where English is a second language, and students need the language in order to prepare for examinations or to use at work. India, Singapore and Malaysia are good examples, but TESL is more commonly used in English-speaking western countries with foreign immigrants, such as the UK, USA, Australia and New Zealand.

Dual-Award Certificate

The Chichester College TESOL Course covers TEFL and TESL, and this is reflected in the certificate you will earn (120 Hour TESOL Dual Award in TEFL/TESL) which will allow you to teach English, to those whose native language is not English, anywhere in the world.

A good English teacher understands how to make English accessible through fun, focused and relevant classes. As a teacher with this qualification, you will know how to choose the right material for your lessons and teach English to all learners of English, both adults and children.

What will I learn during the course?

The Full Time Course covers all the essential aspects you will need for teaching English. During the course, you will learn much of the theory relating to teaching English to speakers of other languages. You will learn how to teach adults, teenagers and young learners, and the ways in which these students differ. You will also learn how to teach specific skills, for example, how to help a student improve their pronunciation, and develop their reading skills. In addition, the course provides opportunities to practice your teaching skills. This is done in two ways: through peer teaching, where you will teach your classmates; and through interaction with real students.

The Full Time Course has three components: in class sessions where you will learn most of the theories and pedagogy related to teaching; workshops which will give you opportunities to put some of these theories into practice; and field trips/excursions during which you will observe other teachers at work, and try your hand at working with English language students.

What can I do with the qualification?

Once you are qualified, the world of teaching English opens up to you. Teach English to young learners in primary schools or kindergartens, to teenagers in high schools, at universities or even to businessmen and women in the corporate world. Jobs in English language teaching will be available to you in countries around the world. In Thailand, we offer a careers advice service which comes with the guarantee of a job teaching English.
